Why be good at only one sport, when you can be amazing at three! I’m sure nearly every triathlete has had this thought at least once.
Triathlons are an endurance event that requires you to clock a swim (ideally in open waters), a bike ride and a run across various distances in a continuous sequence. Runners hail the triathlon, a sport that offers a cross-training workout for the whole body, as the new marathon. This multisport evolved in the 1970s and was introduced as an Olympic sport in the 2000 games in Sydney, Australia. In recent years, several Indian athletes have been smitten by the Triathlon bug and are travelling for races across the globe.
There are different types of triathlons, ranging from the easiest, known as the super sprint triathlon to the most challenging which is the Ironman.
- The super sprint consists of 0.4km swim, 10 km bike ride and 2.5km run.
- The sprint triathlon includes an approximately 0.75km swim, 24 km bike ride and 5km run.
- The Olympic distance, which is typically 1.5km swim, 40 km bike ride and 10 km run.
- Half Ironman (70.3) is comprised of 1.9km swim, 90km bike ride, and 21km run.
- The Ironman distance consists of 3.8 km swim, 180 km bike ride and 42 km run which is considered the most challenging.
Triathletes compete in the above distances for the fastest overall course completion time, including timed “transitions” between the individual swim, cycle, and run sections.
While it is a great opportunity for aspiring athletes to test their endurance levels, in recent years we have seen some amazing homegrown triathlons that have helped shape Indian amateur athletes to compete at an international platform.
